Snapshots from the studio during
the recording of "Farlig vandring"
During the period of november 21. to december 9 2003, Panzerpappa recorded their next album, Farlig vandring, in Spendless Studios in Oslo, Norway. Here's some pictures and a short studio report...
Jarle and Ida Cecilie Tingstein, one of the guest musicians on the record. |
![]() In deep thoughts... On "Farlig vandring", we're using some new equipment, the Roland SPD-S sampling pad being one of the new "Panzer-tools". It's basically a drum multipad with an integrated sampler. The sounds that were triggered from the SPD-S were sampled and edited by Trond ![]()

![]() Jarle preparing for recording. The guitar was recorded with a Shure Beta 57 dynamic microphnone through a ART Tube MP preamplifier. The Tube MP gives the signal some bottom and warmth that add a nice touch to the sound. |
![]() On this album we wanted to use a broader palette of sounds. We therefore used some guest musicians to widen the sonic landscape of Panzerpappa. Ola Lindh played vibraphone on "Utrygge trøfler" and "Agraphia". Ola is an excellent musician and managed to play everything we wanted him to play. |
![]() The recorder The recorder was a TASCAM MSR-24 24 track recorder, using one inch tape, and "Farlig Vandring" were recorded on EMTEC 900 tape. Spendless studio is a very simple, but good sounding studio, and the warmth of the analog tape gives a nice touch to the sound of the album. We used just a few outboard effect processors for the mixing, because we wanted a dry, close-up sound that kept the focus on compositions rather than the latest and coolest effects.

![]() Here's Steinar behind his trusty old Roland XP-50 workstation syntheseizer. Instead of using a lot of different sounds, Steinar concentrates on using a handful of carefully picked sounds that suits the music perfectly. All the keyboard sounds were recorded through an ART Tube MP tube pre amp. Best keyboard preset name on this record: "Crummy piano" |
![]() Anders with his new "sussebass"-guitar, This is a Warwick Thumb 5-string with bolt-on neck. Anders recorded all of his bass guitar and Chapman Stick parts through his Boss GT-6B processor direct in to the mixing board. |
![]() The table in the studio ususally looked worse than this.... |
![]() Ingrid Berg Mehus played violin on "Ellipsoidisk karusell". She is only 16 years old and a really good musician.
|
![]() This is Marius Ilagsmoen, one of the owners of Spendless Studios. Spendless is normally used by bands that are more into sixties sounding pop music, so it's easy to understand the sceptical outlook of Marius considering the fact that Panzerpappa seldom plays music that can be caracterized as pop music.. Marius have told me that they've had a big clean up in the studio to remove all the traces of 15/8, 19/16 and other un-dancable time signatures...

![]() Anders reading one of the many scores. Charts are extensively used in Panzerpappa. It gives us the possibility to make complex arrangements that needn’t to be remembered. It is also convenient when you want to make quick changes in the arrangements. Instead of learning it all over again, you just play the new arrangement… well, at least you try to do.. Or do as Trond, learn it by heart, since he is such a lousy reader!
|
![]() One of the many times we watched each other recording. Most of the 125 hours we used to record and mix the album was used for waiting... |
![]() Mr. Good-lookin-drummer and wannabe karaoke-dude... |
